Why me? That is the question luckless punters ask. Seems there's a kind of sick joke going around. With two consecutive weeks without a win, there's trouble ahead. Money in the bankroll is gone, rent is due, or the momma is going to have a baby anytime now. Whew what a mess.
Now don't look at me, but people try to find a scapegoat. Someone or something must be to blame for their misfortune. Since they owe money to the bookie, they can't blame him. Or they can't blame the horses, jockeys, trainers or the clerks of the course. They can't even blame themselves. If they put all the blame on the horse racing betting system, they must be joking.
The betting system for horse racing uses different approaches for different races. The perversity does not lie in the system but on our greed and haste to have the loot.
Take for example my long-time neighbor and co-punter. He explained over a couple of beers during a backyard barbeque that when he started betting online he had the hots for trading real money immediately and lost £600. He almost went crazy trying to figure out what went wrong.
On hindsight it hit upon him that before he plunked in his savings he should have tested the betting system for at least 100 bets and used paper trading. He could have quit then but there was this persistent voice in his mind commanding him to give it another go.
The next time, he studied his bets and recorded all its outcome. He was able to calculate his average winning strikes. When he became comfortable with the betting system, it was all systems go. Now he is making a tidy profit daily! I could have soaked his stained shirt with my tears.
